As of Saturday, January 22, 2022, all non-U.S. citizens entering the United States via land or sea must show proof of full vaccination. Previously the vaccination requirement was mandatory for most travelers, however, it was not enforced on land borders and seaports.
While over two-thirds of goods traded between the U.S. and Canada travel via roads, essential workers previously could travel without proof of vaccination. This changes immediately for all travelers whether for essential and non-essential purposes.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada stated that the country was “aligned” with the United States who actually imposed its own vaccine mandate for truck drivers traveling from the U.S into Canada.
Proof of travelers COVID-19 vaccination status must be one of the World Health Organization’s (WHO)-approved vaccinations, which are:
- Pfizer-BioNTech
- Moderna
- Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen
- Nuvaxovid
- COVOVAX
- Covishield
- Bharat Biotech
- Sinovac
- Sinopharm
However the United States Department of Homeland Security won’t require testing on its land borders or seaports for travelers. But the new rules don’t apply to U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or green card holders.
The U.S. is going through a surge of COVID-19 cases due to the Omicron variant, reporting a seven-day case average is 740,726. This is the highest reported seven-day case average to date. But the good news is that cases have decreased in recent days and it seems that the country is past its peak for cases.
