Cancun Hotels Are Reaching 100% Occupancy Rates This Season

With most countries imposing inconvenient entry restrictions, Mexico is leading the way as the top destination in the Caribbean for the end of the year and the months ahead.

Roberto Cintron Gomez, President of the Cancun, Puerto Morelos, and Isla Mujeres Hotel Association, announced that most hotels in the area are nearing 100% occupancy this winter.

“Hotels are reporting 100% capacity over the winter and we are promoting heavily. We also want to bring down our room rates which are trending very high right now.”

Reservations for January and February 2022 have already surpassed 45% in more than 300 local hotels.

If the state manages to continue “green” at the country’s epidemiological traffic light system it would reach 100 percent in the coming weeks.

To cope with the demand, the government aims to add more flights from Europe, including England, in addition to the seven routes from Russia and a new route from Brazil.

Data from a recent study by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) shows that in 2021 the Caribbean may grow up to 47.3%, compared to 2020, resulting in a roughly $12 billion rise.

However, a travel alert issued by the US Department of State on Dec. 8 regarding the risks looming over the region may overshadow these positive perspectives.

“Violent crime – such as homicide, kidnapping, carjacking, and robbery – is widespread and common in Mexico. The U.S. government has limited ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in many areas of Mexico, as travel by U.S. government employees to certain areas is prohibited or restricted.”

COVID-19 was cited as the main reason for the Level 3 “reconsider travel” designation.

The governor of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, Carlos Joaquin Gonzalez, quickly responded stating that the popular tourist area is safe and secure for all visitors from the United States.

He also announced the implementation of a special security program to protect all arrivals ahead of the normally busy winter holiday, according to local news outlets.
