Hurricane Ian Affecting Number Of Tourist Hotspots In The Mexican Caribbean

Heavy winds and rain are affecting a number of Quintana Roo tourist hotspots, including Cancun and Playa del Carmen.

On Monday morning, the tropical storm intensified into a hurricane, causing the state of Quintana Roo and Cancun to issue a weather alert.

This was a “faze azule,” or blue alarm, which is often issued when storms are approaching the targeted area and safety measures are required.

This warning is also intended to reassure visitors that they are not in immediate danger but should proceed with caution outside.

Currently, the Yucatan Peninsula is expected to receive a surge of humid air from the Caribbean due to Ian, which will also cause heavy rains and violent wind gusts that will affect the ocean.

Waves of two to three meters have also already been measured on the coast of Quintana Roo. This means that going to the beach at this time would be extremely dangerous.

Tropical Storm Ian Could Intensify To Hurricane Category And Impact Travel To Florida This Week

Currently, meteorologists fear that the storm could intensify in the coming hours. The National Water Commission announced at 4 a.m. yesterday that Ian had risen to Category 3 and was now approaching Category 4.

The strong winds and inclement weather are enough to uproot trees and break telephone poles, which can lead to roadblocks and power outages.

Although this has not yet been confirmed in Cancun and surrounding areas, it is undoubtedly a possibility if conditions worsen.

It’s not necessary for anyone who were planning to stay in Quintana Roo during the coming days to change their travel plans.

Cancun will continue to face strong winds and rain for the rest of the week even though it is not in the hurricane’s direct path.

Therefore, it could be a good idea to think about postponing a trip to the area until next week, once the hurricane’s impacts are expected to fade.

Tourists in Cancun, Holbox Island, and Riviera Maya have been advised to watch out for official storm warnings at this time.

People who are concerned about being impacted by Ian are urged to pay attention to the directions offered by the state of Quintana Roo’s National Civil Protection System.
