Singapore to open quarantine-free travel lanes with Germany, HK and Brunei

Travelers from Germany, Brunei, Hong Kong and Macau who want to spend some time in Singapore will be able to more easily do so in the near future.

Entry requirements will still be notable for those coming from Germany and Brunei, however, but they will be relatively seamless for individuals from Hong Kong and Macau minus a brief self-isolation period while awaiting a COVID-19 test result.

The proposed arrangement with Germany and Brunei is expected to launch in September with applications for those looking to travel from either of those countries to Singapore to open on Sept. 1.

They would need to meet four primary requirements: being fully vaccinated, flying on a flight designated for this travel lane, downloading a contact tracing app for use while in Singapore and having been in either Germany or Brunei for the previous 21 days prior to taking their flight to Singapore.

In addition, these travelers will need to take a total of four COVID-19 tests: the first one-two days prior to departing for Singapore, the second upon arriving in the city-state, the third on their third day there and the final one after having spent a week in the country. However, no self-isolation is necessary.

Meanwhile, those in Singapore hoping to go to Germany will get to enjoy traveling to another country for nonessential reasons without needing to quarantine for the first time since 2020. This is due to this arrangement being reciprocal with identical requirements in place for Singaporeans going to Germany or Brunei.

Norbert Riedel, Germany’s ambassador to Singapore, said that these plans are both “welcome” and “justified in the light of Singapore’s successful vaccination campaign.” Singapore is one of the world’s leaders as it relates to vaccination rates with 73% of its population fully vaccinated and an additional 6% partially vaccinated.

As for travelers from Hong Kong and Macau, they do not need to even be partially vaccinated to get approved for an air travel pass that allows them to head to Singapore. However, they will need to take one COVID-19 test, upon arrival, and then self-isolate until that test result is returned.

To be approved for entry, they will need to have been in Hong Kong or Macau for the previous three weeks.

This travel option will be made available as soon as Aug. 26. Applications can be submitted now.

However, this arrangement has not been adopted by Hong Kong or Macau, so those in Singapore looking to travel to either of those places will need to follow their procedures and regulations.
