South Florida Reporting Over 2 Million Daily Visitors Despite Omicron Concerns

Though COVID-19 cases are climbing in Florida, holiday travelers are moving forward with their plans.

According to the TSA, over two million passengers per day have passed through security — for three days in a row.

Long lines are crowding Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. Some passengers say that the Omicron variant of COVID-19 doesn’t cause them extra concern.

Passenger Manuel Carlo stated that he’s “not worried” because he’s fully vaccinated and has had a booster shot. He also expressed that wearing a mask is another way he stays safe.

Other passengers think current travel safety requirements are excessive. Dr. Anthony Fauci continues to advocate for vaccination, but he’s also stated that masks are still vital.

The boost in travel is happening at the same time as a boost in infection rates. State health authorities have reported nearly 30,000 emergent cases since Dec. 16.

Because of the virus’s quick spread, various local events will no longer move forward. Organizers for the events have suggested that these cancellations are important for the protection of both workers and guests.

The weekly average of new COVID-19 cases in Florida has more than doubled since Dec. 11. However, the death rate is currently dropping.

The Omicron variant is now in at least 43 states.
