Stonehenge II, Ingram
Located at 120 Point Theater Road in Ingram, Texas, the Hill Country Arts Foundation property now houses a replica of the English Stonehenge that is about two-thirds the size of the original.
It simulates the appearance of Stonehenge before weather and erosion obscured some of the original construction. The biggest difference, aside from size, is that these stones are much lighter; those from Stonehenge weigh more than four tons. They are made of plaster attached to a wire mesh frame.
Luckenbach
You probably know Luckenbach from the iconic song by Waylon Jennings, even if you are not from Texas. It’s one of the cutest small towns in Texas, with only three residents and two main buildings, one of which houses the ruins of a post office, a running saloon and a general store. The other is a dance hall where prominent Texas country musicians perform once a week, making it a terrific location to visit for a true Texas experience.
Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge, Los Fresnos
More bird species have been identified in this national wildlife refuge near the Mexican border than in any other refuge in the country. There are an astounding 417 different bird species, including cardinals, turkey pheasants, jays, and aplomado falcons. In the fall, Laguna Atascosa is home to a million red-headed ducks. Blue crabs, sea turtles that lay their eggs, and many other species depend on this habitat.
Boca Chica Beach, Brownsville
The community has been working for years to preserve this “secret” beach, located in Boca Chica State Park about 30 minutes from Brownsville. Since Texas Monthly magazine recently reported on this place where you can drive across the sand, camp, fish, and swim in extremely clear water, more and more people are learning about it. Some visitors even carry metal detectors to search for buried treasure believed to date back to the days of the pirates.
Comfort
Comfort is a charming town with a unique atmosphere in the Texas Hill Country. It is home to the eccentric Comfort Little Theater, which transforms into a “Dark Thirty” the last weekend in April and the first weekend in May.
It’s also home to a unique retail store called “The Elephant Story,” where customers can buy coffee made from elephant dung for $50, and in the second half of October, it hosts the popular Scarecrow Invasion, when the town is overrun by countless scarecrows of all kinds.
Hamilton Pool, Dripping Springs
One of the most beautiful swimming spots in the entire state of Texas is this stunning refuge tucked away amid cow pastures west of Austin near Dripping Springs. Massive limestone boulders surround the natural pool and giant stalactites protrude from the ceiling above. To get there, you’ll have to hike a short trail through a green creek-fed canyon that leads to a spectacular grotto.
Terlingua – Ghostown
Only a few dozen people live in Terlingua, where there is neither a Walmart nor a McDonald’s. This abandoned silver mining town, practically in Mexico and located on the Rio Grande, is visited mostly by tourists who are in town for Big Bend National Park.
In addition to curious attractions such as a submarine encased in sand and a pirate ship, there are a variety of restaurants, pubs, unusual housing options, art galleries and a gift store. In addition, two chili contests are held here every year, with about 10,000 “chiliheads” participating.
Willow City Loop, Willow City/Fredericksburg
The stunning 20-mile road that winds through the green hills of Gillespie County in the Texas Hill Country offers an exceptionally scenic drive. The narrow two-lane ranch road stretches for 13 miles and reveals some of the most prominent and ancient geological features in the central part of the state.
The beauty of this scenic route is especially enchanting in the spring when the brilliant bluebonnets, the official flower of Texas, provide a breathtaking display and add a touch of natural splendor to the already stunning landscape.
The Blue Lagoon, Huntsville
The Blue Lagoon in Huntsville, Texas, is a hidden gem for nature enthusiasts. This beautiful spot boasts clear blue waters and is nestled within a serene natural setting. Whether you’re into swimming, picnicking, or just relaxing by the water’s edge, Blue Lagoon offers a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
