Americans Rank Cancun And NYC As Top Thanksgiving Destinations

Allianz Travel Insurance recently revealed its ‘Top 10 Thanksgiving Destination Index’ which found that Americans favored Thanksgiving travel to New York City and Cancun.

Following analyzing 2.3 million travel itineraries which looked at roundtrip flights around the Thanksgiving holidays, travelers overwhelmingly chose the bright lights and urban sprawl of New York City as well as the spectacular beaches of fine white sand of Cancun, Mexico.

New York has been drawing in both domestic and international travelers recently, now that restrictions are waning and Broadway shows are up and running. For the upcoming Thanksgiving weekend, it’s the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade which again is taking place in-person. which has drawn interest from travelers.

Other domestic destinations which topped the survey included Seattle in second, Boston in third, Atlanta in fourth and Dallas-Fort Worth in fifth.

For those looking to escape the cold and enjoy warm festive weather, Cancun (for the second year in a row) tops the list of international Thanksgiving travel spots. Along with Cancun, those in second and third San Jose Del Cabo and Puerto Vallarta respectively, are beach destinations on Mexico’s Pacific coast.

To round up the top five on the international travel spots include London in fourth place and Montego Bay, Jamaica in fifth.

The index also revealed the last three years of holiday destinations, and most notably domestically was the rise of Atlanta from ninth in 2020 to fourth in 2021 and the inclusion of Chicago and Detroit this year as well.

In terms of international destinations, the top three of Cancun, San Jose Del Cabo and Puerto Vallarta remained the same as of 2020, with London as a new destination as well as Nassau and Paris climbing back to the top ten after missing out last year.
