U.S. State Department Issues Updated Travel Advisory For Israel

On October 11, 2023, the U.S. Department of State raised the travel advisory for Israel and the West Bank to Level 3—Reconsider Travel. The travel advisory for the Gaza Strip is Level 4 (Do Not Travel). The previous travel advisory, issued on October 3, 2023, has been superseded.

According to the U.S. State Department, it is strongly discouraged for citizens to travel to Gaza because of the presence of terrorism, civil unrest, and armed conflicts. Additionally, individuals are advised to reconsider travel plans to Israel, where terrorism and civil unrest pose potential risks, as well as to the West Bank, which also experiences instances of terrorism and civil unrest.

Situation in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza

Terrorist groups and lone-wolf extremists are actively planning potential attacks in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza, targeting various locations, including tourist spots, transportation hubs, markets, and government facilities. These attacks may occur without warning, and the region has seen a rise in unanticipated demonstrations, posing security risks.

What does the U.S Department say about traveling to Gaza?

Do Not Travel. Border crossings between Gaza and Israel or Egypt can be closed for extended periods during times of unrest and military conflict, so plan on staying for an unlimited amount of time. Make sure your strategy for entering and leaving Gaza does not depend on U.S. government assistance.

What does the U.S. Department say about traveling to Israel and West Bank?

Reconsider Travel. Currently, personal travel is prohibited for U.S. government employees unless it is mission critical. Due to heightened security concerns or threats, the Embassy may impose even more stringent travel restrictions on its employees with little or no advance notice.
