Mexican National Guard To Crack Down On Illegal Transportation At Cancun Airport

After Canapat’s meeting with the National Guard, in which they worked to launch operations to eliminate illegal transportation at Cancun International Airport, Sergio González, president of Amatur, pointed out the importance of these actions, because these criminals, as he calls them, are clandestine transporters.

“We are already waiting for these operations to begin. As you know, we have reported this for a long time to the National Guard, to the Mexican government, to all the authorities and they have not given us any answers, much less from ASUR. Well, they say it is the job of the National Guard,” he said.

González explained that he personally sent a series of letters everywhere, to the Ministry of Tourism, to the President and “to everyone,” but he affirms that with the meeting that Canapat had with the GN is a good opportunity, even with Mara Lezama, governor of Quintana Roo, for her to present the problem to President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

The Maya Train is coming to reinforce, he assures, “ASUR says that it is not an authority, and cannot deal with these thugs.” he stressed.

He explained that the transporters that are inside the airport are legal as well as car rentals, official taxis, travel agencies and timeshares.

“Illegal transporters should be removed. I do not have data, but I know that attacks or incidents of brawls and fights are recorded every day, there are many a day, very few of which are reported, but they are documented on video,” he commented.

González continues to insist that all authorities pay attention and that these operations be carried out and that they do not remain only in dialogue or promises.

Uber vs Taxis

For a while, Uber stopped operating completely and later resumed, but without the official approval of the local government. This lasted until March 2023, when they resumed operations in an appropriate manner.

A few weeks ago, however, the ongoing dispute between Uber and taxi drivers took a sharp turn when five cab drivers were arrested by police on suspicion of assaulting a female Uber driver.

In addition, two cab drivers in Cancun, Mexico, were also arrested for attacking a car carrying foreign visitors.

“Strong action will be taken to ensure that the state is a safe destination for local inhabitants and visitors,” the office of the state prosecutor stated in a statement.

When will the Maya train be ready?

The Mayan Train’s stretch from Palenque, Chiapas, to Cancun will be launched on Friday, December 15, according to President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

Conversely, the President clarified that work on Section 5 will continue until the end of January 2024, when the Quintana Roo section from Cancún to Tulum will be completed. In February, the 1,554 kilometers that will connect Tabasco, Chiapas, Campeche, Yucatán and Quintana Roo will be combined.
