Spain Increases Income Requirement for Digital Nomad Visa in 2025

Spain’s government has officially raised the minimum wage, impacting financial requirements for the Digital Nomad Visa (DNV) in 2025. Foreign nationals applying for or renewing their DNV must now meet higher income thresholds.

On January 29, 2025, Spain’s Ministry of Labour reached an agreement with major trade unions to increase the country’s minimum wage (Salario Mínimo Interprofessional, SMI) by 4.4%. This adjustment raises the SMI by €50 per month, bringing it to €1,184 across 14 annual payments, amounting to a total of €16,576 gross per year.

Revised Financial Requirements for the Digital Nomad Visa

The DNV’s financial requirements are directly tied to Spain’s SMI. Since the SMI is typically quoted as 14 payments per year, many foreigners must first convert it into a 12-payment format for clarity. Under this conversion:

  • New SMI: €1,184 across 14 payments = €16,576 per year
  • Equivalent Monthly Income Across 12 Payments: €1,381.33 per month
  • Minimum Required Income for DNV (200% of the SMI): €2,762 per month

At current exchange rates, this equates to approximately £2,310 per month or $2,871 per month.

Impact on DNV Applicants with Dependents

For applicants seeking a DNV for themselves and their family members, additional income is required:

  • For a partner: An additional 75% of SMI (€1,035.99), bringing the total required income for a couple to €3,798 per month.
  • For each additional dependent (e.g., children): An extra 25% of SMI (€345.33 per child).

For example:

  • Applicant + Partner + One Child: €4,144 per month
  • Applicant + Partner + Two Children: €4,489 per month

Gross Income Requirement

It is important to note that these figures represent gross income (known as bruto in Spanish), before taxes and deductions.

Implementation Timeline

Spain’s Minister of Labour, Yolanda Díaz, has stated that this wage increase will be formally approved by the Spanish Cabinet in the near future. Once enacted, the Unidad de Grandes Empresas y Colectivos Estratégicos (UGE), the agency responsible for processing Digital Nomad Visas, is expected to adjust the financial requirements accordingly.

Prospective applicants are advised to ensure they meet the updated income thresholds to remain eligible for Spain’s Digital Nomad Visa in 2025.
