This Campground In Michigan Was Just Named No. 1 In America

People have long been in search of fresh air and open space, and this trend does not seem to be abating.

With their list of the best campgrounds in America for 2023, Campspot helps people make smart choices about where to travel this summer.

Before the public could cast their vote, Campspot examined more than 70,000 data points, including reservations and reviews. They also worked with camping industry professionals to select winners based on criteria such as appeal and originality.

The winning campsite is a lesser-known campground in northern Michigan. Located in Indian River, Michigan, between Burt Lake and Mullett Lake, Indian River RV Resort is a hidden treasure.

There are many reasons why this property stood out, but it’s difficult to disregard the plethora of camper reviews praising its cleanliness. It was praised by many other reviewers as being the “most manicured, clean, and well-kept campground [they] have been to” said a Tripadvisor reviewer.

The mature trees that largely protect Indian River RV Resort and give the area a woodsy look. It also sits between two Michigan lakes popular for boating, water activities and fishing. Tahquamenon Falls and car-free Mackinac Island are both accessible to hikers to the north.

There is plenty to do on-site for those who prefer to stay near to home. Indian River RV Resort’s heated pool, basketball and volleyball courts, horseshoe pit, playground, dog run and spacious pavilion are great for large events. There are two bathhouses, a camp store and laundry facilities.

Campers can secure one of the many RV sites, which have sewer, water, electricity and outlets up to 50 amps, or they can pitch their tent on one of the available sites. Each site has a private fire pit and picnic table, and free Wi-Fi is available throughout the entire facility. Nine two-bedroom log cabins, each with a mini-fridge, microwave, air conditioning, and a private porch (with swing) next to a fire pit and picnic table, are available for guests seeking a more conventional night’s rest.

On the Saco Family Campground in Brownfield, Maine (ranked No. 2 on the list), or Nugget RV Resort in Saint Regis, Montana (No. 3), are alternatives for those who find that Indian River RV Resort is already full.

The season at Indian River RV Resort begins May 1 and ends Sept. 30. (Monthly stays are welcome, and pets are allowed.) Rates per night start at $50. Visit indianriverrvresort.com to learn more
