The United States and Mexico have extended their land border closure until at least February 24, because of increasing coronavirus incidence. The closure came into effect on March 21, 2020, to reduce the spread of coronavirus.
Mexico has asked to keep the common border closed for another month. The regulation has already been renewed multiple times and it is likely to be prolonged again.
Travelers should avoid all non-essential travel. However, the restrictions do not affect flights between the two countries.
The action does not prevent U.S. citizens from returning home either.
Mexico does not require a negative COVID-19 PCR test to enter the country, and there is no mandatory quarantine after arrival unless showing symptoms.
Hundreds of Americans cross the border to shop, visit family or go on vacation every day.
The CDC (American Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) recommends undergoing a coronavirus test no more than 72 hours before departure to Mexico as well as before the journey back to the U.S.
Also, all American travelers should self-isolate for at least seven days after returning home.
Around 500,000 Mexicans living abroad visited their home country over the Christmas and New Year’s Eve holidays.
As a result, the number of COVID-19 cases in both countries is alarming.
So far, the U.S. has reported more than 22 million coronavirus cases and 390,089 fatalities. At the moment, there are over 9 million active cases.
In comparison, Mexico has recorded 1.5 million cases and over 136,000 deaths. This way, Mexico is on the list of the worst countries in the world with 246,892 active cases as of current.
