Colombia’s Digital Nomad Visa Project Is On Its Way, Authorities say

Over the past decade, Colombia has emerged as one of Latin America’s most popular tourist destinations.

According to official data, the country saw an increase in foreign visitors by almost 200 percent between 2010 and 2019.

This is thanks to its breathtaking landscapes, Caribbean flair, vibrant culture, efficient tourism infrastructure and sense of security in its main tourist destinations.

Colombia recently enacted a new immigration law that is scheduled to take effect on October 22, 2022.

The current structure of the visa system, which is divided into three primary visa types – visitor visas, migrant visas, and resident visas- will not be affected by the new law. However, the new law adds additional visa classifications and changes the application process.

Among other new visa subclasses, there is a new visa for digital nomads.

Conditions and Requirements

  • Foreign citizens employed outside Colombia will be able to live and work in Colombia using a new visa called the Digital Nomad Visa for up to two years.
  • The visa will also be available to individuals who want to start a digital technology business in Colombia.
  • Digital Nomad Visa holders will not be allowed to engage in local paid employment or work for an employer in Colombia.
  • Bank documents should prove the applicant earns a monthly salary of at least three minimum legal salaries (USD 685, as of July 29).
  • A letter written in Spanish or English from one or more international companies the applicant works for is required.
  • The applicant must show proof of health insurance that covers accidents, sickness, maternity, disabilities, hospitalization, death, or repatriation during the time they plan to stay in the country.
  • The applicant’s passport must be valid for at least six months from the date of application. Currently, there is no minimum validity period for the passport.

With the new changes, immigration authorities will be able to make a decision on a visa application within 30 calendar days of its submission, instead of the current five to eight business days.

Authorities will be able to decide on petitions within 10 days of receiving additional documentation, instead of the current five to eight business days.

After the new administration enters office on August 7, 2022, general policy adjustments and reforms are possible. Travelinglifestyle will keep you updated on important happenings.
