The deployment of new Automated People Mover (APM) train cars will assist passengers in getting from terminals to parking lots, car rental locations, and subway stations. The service is part of a $2 billion project that is expected to be completed by 2023.

Some of the brand-new electric train cars for this system have already arrived, according to the Los Angeles Times. The 200,000 passengers this crowded airport receives each day will be served by the people movers for free.

The mayor of Los Angeles, Eric Garcetti, declared:  “After decades of saying no, of airport directors who said I don’t want to give up my parking revenues… of people rolling their bags down Century Boulevard asking friends to pick them up or drop them off, the hell that we knew LAX as is going to be a thing of the past.”

This brand-new electric train service will be a pioneer in the country. Local authorities claim that this special autonomous car model will revolutionize mobility with zero emissions and extremely effective service.

“We’re completely transforming how the traveling public gets to and from LAX. The centerpiece of that modernization is our automated people mover,” said Justin Erbacci, chief executive of the Los Angeles World Airports.

And added: “When open, guests and employees will be able to soar above traffic, never again having to come into the central terminal area with their car. Unless, of course, they really want to.”

Notice that a group of cars carrying 200 passengers will pass each station every two minutes.

The loop’s final station, the Airport Metro Connector, will connect to the Crenshaw/ LAX line and have six stations that can be reached in less than ten minutes. The first phase of this new metro line is scheduled to open early in 2023.

The exact opening date has not yet been determined. Although the track is almost finished, the stops still need more construction work.

Test operations will begin in early 2023. The city government has promised that the entire project will be completed and in operation before the 2026 World Cup and the 2028 Olympics.
