Traveling from the U.S. to the U.K. during COVID: All You Need to Know

Traveling from the U.S. to the U.K. during COVID

The U.K. has seen one of the highest numbers of COVID-19 deaths in Europe. It has also been threatened by the more contagious coronavirus strains resulting in multiple lockdowns and tight restrictions.

Most safety measures were lifted on July 19. At the moment, there are no social distancing rules, no mask mandates, and no limitations on the number of people at public gatherings. However, there are several restrictions in the U.K. regarding international travel.

If you are traveling from the U.S. to the U.K. now during the pandemic, here is all you need to know to cross the border without hassle.

What documents you will need

Traveling during the COVID-19 pandemic requires several extra documents. First and foremost, you must take an antigen or PCR test within three days before starting your journey. You are also required to fill out a passenger locator form.

Subsequently, vaccinated U.S. travelers must undergo another test on or before day two after arrival (arrival day is day zero). The test must be booked ahead of your trip. A list of providers can be found here.

Unvaccinated visitors must quarantine for 10 days after arrival and test on days two and eight of quarantine.

Are there any restrictions in the U.K.?

As the U.K. moved to Step 4 of the roadmap on July 19, most restrictions were lifted. Bars, pubs, restaurants, and tourist attractions are open. But even though more than 60% of the country’s population has been vaccinated, it is still recommended to stay cautious.

You should avoid large gatherings and use a face covering in crowded areas, such as shops or public transport. Note that some events might require a negative COVID-19 test.

You can use the NHS Covid Pass app to store your test results. However, vaccination status there is available only for those vaccinated in Wales or England. For vaccination status and test results, U.S. travelers can also use the Verifly app.

How about the way back?

You will have to get tested on your way back to the U.S. as well regardless of your vaccination status. Testing might be available at the hotel, at Heathrow Airport, or at a local lab

Alternatively, you can use proof of recovery from the virus within the past 90 days before travel.
