While international prices continue to soar over the July 4 holiday weekend, domestic airfare is dramatically lower than last year. Prices have dropped 27 percent compared to last year, as some round-trip domestic flights over the holiday weekend can be had for as little as $300.
That is $100 less than last year, according to the travel app Hopper. This is welcome news for travelers as these prices are in line with pre-pandemic prices.
Domestic trip pricing though is contingent on the days of travel as the most popular days to travel are Friday, June 30, and Tuesday, July 4. If you’d like to save a little money, depart on Saturday, July 1 instead to save an average of $74 per ticket.
Hopper advises that travelers should travel on Saturday, July 1, as and return on Monday, July 3 if they truly want to save money as some fairs are only $90 between major cities, if booking through the Hopper app of course.
Pricing isn’t the only item travelers should be worried about during the holiday weekend, it is also the crowds. With millions on the go, it is best to avoid departure times from about 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Popular domestic cities for trips are many of the larger US cities with a number of travelers booking trips to Las Vegas, Atlanta and New Orleans.
Unlike domestic flights, travels abroad remain the highest they’ve been in at least five years with round trip tickets to Europe costing $1,167 compared to only $850 last year.
It is not only Europe that has seen an increase in pricing, trips to Asia have also ballooned, with the average round trip tickets fetching $1,817, compared to only $917 during the Summer of 2020.
