AAA Reveals TOP Travel Trends For Spring Break 2024

If the thought of spending another spring break in your dorm or your childhood bedroom sounds like a wasted opportunity, now is the time to start planning a spring break trip that will earn its place as a core memory for decades to come.

Whether you are piecing together your first solo travel experience, planning one last beach bash with a group of college friends as graduation approaches, or somewhere in between, considering the latest travel trends can be an important step in creating a spring break to remember.

Taking a cruise is often considered to be one of the easiest ways to visit several destinations in one trip, and this mode of travel is quickly gaining popularity as a one-stop shop for getting the most out of spring break. Rather than spending weeks putting together your itinerary, simply choosing a cruise and booking your flights allows you to create the perfect balance between excitement and relaxation with minimal planning.

Data from AAA Travel indicates a 28% surge in cruise reservations for March and April in comparison to the previous year, alongside a remarkable 60% increase in bookings for cruises embarking from South Florida.

With most pandemic-era travel restrictions and mandates in the past, international travel is also nearing or surpassing levels from before 2020 in many top spring break destinations. The trend for international Spring Break vacations is experiencing a notable increase over the previous year. According to AAA’s data for March and April, there has been a 20% growth in international flight reservations and a 37% rise in hotel accommodations bookings.

London, Paris, Rome, Amsterdam, and several other popular European cities are especially common choices among older college students who missed out on international travel opportunities in high school or at the beginning of college as a result of years of travel restrictions.

If you simply want to spend your week away from classes relaxing and do not prioritize doing something unique this time, Florida remains a tried-and-true option for having fun in the sun. From enjoying the beaches of Miami, Fort Lauderdale, or Panama City Beach to heading to Disney World, the Sunshine State offers a variety of options for soaking up every minute of your spring break without breaking the bank.

“Orlando is the top choice for Spring Break travelers, while Fort Lauderdale and Miami are the two most popular domestic cruise ports,” said Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel. “Many travelers are looking for warm weather, pools and beaches, and outdoor adventures this time of year, and cruise vacations check all those boxes.”, said Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel.

10 Spring Break Tips for Travelers

To ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience, consider the following travel tips tailored for the spring break season:

  1. Plan Ahead: Early planning cannot be overstated. From securing accommodations to booking flights, advance arrangements can lead to significant savings and better choices. Research your destination thoroughly to understand its peak seasons and local events that might affect availability and pricing.
  2. Budget Wisely: Establish a budget that covers all aspects of your trip, including accommodations, transportation, meals, activities, and unexpected expenses. Look for package deals or group discounts that can stretch your dollar further.
  3. Travel Insurance: Investing in travel insurance can provide peace of mind, covering potential trip cancellations, medical emergencies, or lost luggage. Given the unpredictability of travel, this can be a wise precaution.
  4. Health and Safety: Familiarize yourself with the health and safety guidelines of your destination, especially in light of ongoing global health concerns. Pack a travel health kit with essential medications, hand sanitizer, and masks if required.
  5. Pack Appropriately: Check the weather forecast for your destination and pack accordingly. Remember to include essentials like sunscreen, sunglasses, and comfortable shoes. Packing light can save you from extra baggage fees and make it easier to move around.
  6. Stay Connected: Ensure you have a way to communicate while abroad, whether through an international phone plan or local SIM card. Staying connected is vital for coordinating with your travel group and in case of emergencies.
  7. Respect Local Customs: Take the time to learn about and respect the local customs and laws of your destination. This includes dressing appropriately, understanding tipping etiquette, and being mindful of cultural sensitivities.
  8. Be Flexible: While having a plan is important, maintaining some flexibility in your schedule can enhance your travel experience. Unexpected opportunities or challenges may arise, and being able to adapt can lead to memorable adventures.
  9. Secure Your Valuables: Keep your belongings safe by using hotel safes and carrying only what you need for the day. Be cautious of pickpockets, especially in crowded tourist areas.
  10. Enjoy Responsibly: While spring break is a time for relaxation and fun, responsible behavior ensures that you and others around you have a positive experience. Be mindful of your alcohol consumption and the impact of your actions on the local community and environment.
