Andrés Aguilar Becerril, Undersecretary of Promotion at the State Tourism Secretariat (Sedetur), urged travelers to check any website where they intend to make a purchase to avoid fraud, as it increases in high season, such as the current one.
“The ‘Check and Travel’ (Verifica y Viaja) campaign continues. This campaign is aimed at all people who are planning a trip. Here we provide a series of recommendations for safe purchases to stay informed and visit the official channels,” he recommended.
As for Quintana Roo, he reminded us that there is the portal of the State Tourism Registry that visitors can use to check the credibility of sellers and secure the vacation they long for.
Last year, the number of fraud cases was reduced by 25 percent thanks to various mechanisms implemented. Efforts are currently underway to reinforce successful strategies to curb this crime and ensure that the number continues to decrease.
For example, Aguilar stressed the importance of all businesses in the tourism sector registering their services. To promote the integration of the registries, work has been done with the municipalities. Seven agreements were signed with different municipalities to expand the program, act preventively and create a comprehensive tourism catalog.
Sanctions guidelines have been published and a review strategy is being developed. While destinations such as Cancun are becoming more compliant, rural tourism areas face greater challenges, especially in terms of connectivity.
