Cancun Will Introduce A Card To Waive Traffic Fines For Tourists

The implementation of a card to condone traffic violations for tourists will begin on December 19. This is a project from the Association of Car Rental Companies and the City Council.

Alma Elena Reynoso, President of the Association of Car Rental Companies, mentioned that there is currently an exemption in the traffic regulations for minor offenses, which will now be granted to tourists who rent a vehicle.

“We will start issuing these cards to rental companies so that they can grant tourists this exemption if they commit a minor offense. To do this, they will receive a card with a code that has the person’s name on it. If they use both warnings, they will be flagged,” she assured.

She added that tourists usually travel in rental cars, which is why they have collaborated with the Benito Juárez City Council and also with the Mobility Institute of Quintana Roo (Imoveqroo). Although the system will only be applied in Cancun for now, the goal is to reach other destinations in the Mexican Caribbean.

“The use of the cards will begin next week. The aim is to reform the traffic regulations so that these cards are distributed through legal companies. We are also trying to combat illegal companies that affect tourist destinations,” she explained.

The work being done is positive. There are currently 20 thousand units for rent. “We will start with 1000 units to see how they work.”

“We do not want to incite tourists to commit crimes. The regulations will be in Spanish and English so that they know what is allowed and what is not,” she explained.

The aim is to create digital cards. At the moment, they are only printed.
