These 10 U.S. States Report Highest Passport Delays This Summer

For some Americans, it has gotten difficult to obtain a passport. With delays affecting certain states more than others, people in California, North Carolina, Georgia, Texas, Pennsylvania, New York, Tennessee, New Jersey, Maryland, and Virginia are having the most difficult time getting passports.

Not All States Are Experiencing High Wait Times

Although these states are facing delays, there are some states that are experiencing no delays in renewing and issuing passports—Wyoming and North and South Dakota, for example. States like these are offering quick turnarounds for people in search of passport services.

Travel Rates Are Increasing

There has been an increase in the amount of Americans who are looking for a passport, according to MarketWatch. Between January 2023 and July 2023, the number of people interested in obtaining a passport increased by 19 percent.

Over the past few years, Americans have been able to travel more, after pandemic-related lockdowns have ceased, so more and more Americans are becoming comfortable traveling. Last year, there were over 22 million passports issued, and in the beginning half of 2023, around 500,000 passport applications were filled out a week.

For Many Americans, Long Wait Times and Vacations Cancelled

Due to these record numbers, it is taking around 10 to 13 weeks for people to receive their passports, which makes it difficult for people trying to vacation on short notice. It is possible to pay for expedited service, though, but still, this will get you your passport in around 7 to 9 weeks.

Unfortunately, these delays mean that many Americans are having to cancel their trips abroad. Residents of states experiencing extreme passport delays are reporting that they’re losing thousands of dollars, because they cannot get refunds on their already-planned trips.

For many Americans, who have to save over months and years to vacation, this is a devastating situation. Hopefully, as time goes on, it will be easier to receive a passport, but for the time being, if you’re interested in traveling, apply for a passport early.
