Transportation In Cancun To Become Safer As Taxis And Uber Finally Sign Agreement

Uber and taxi drivers have signed a comprehensive agreement to end disputes. The cab drivers will now be integrated into the Uber app so that both sides are represented on the same platform. The deal becomes operative on January 1, 2024.

There were disagreements, as in any large city, but especially in a tourist destination like Cancun. However, it seems that both the rideshare program drivers and the cab drivers are in agreement at the moment.

“Today what we are celebrating is a new stage of Uber in the state. Six years ago this would have been unthinkable, but what we are achieving today is making way for modernity, technology and many benefits for the people in the state, both for tourists and for the people who live here,” General Secretary Heriberto Nunez said.

More opportunities for both citizens and tourists are brought about by the agreement. The app will show the options between local taxis and Uber drivers and their vehicles.

The Cancun Agreement is comparable to the agreements in New York, Paris, London, Rome and Punta Cana, among other major cities.

It is expected that over 2,000 cab drivers will sign up for the Uber app.

Recent violent conflicts between Uber and Taxi drivers

In recent months, Cancun has witnessed a series of violent conflicts involving taxi drivers targeting Uber vehicles, particularly those carrying tourists. The situation escalated following a legal decision favoring Uber’s operations.

Incidents include aggressive pursuits, physical confrontations, and cases of tourists being forcibly removed from Uber cars. These events have raised safety concerns among visitors and prompted the U.S. Embassy to issue warnings.

The new agreement and recent adjustments are expected to smooth the integration of Uber and calm all the tensions.
